In January of 2024, Betty Li was selected to go on the Guatemala: Learn, Build, Connect JanTerm to work with the non-profit From Houses to Homes however, due to the inauguration taking place during that time, she rerouted to Puerto Rico instead.
With the collaboration of Hunger Corp, a non-profit organization, she and her classmates were able to complete the construction of a community center as well as a house for a woman by the name of Adris, who suffered through cancer and domestic violence.
In the end, the students donated $10,000 to Hunger Corp and $10,000 to From Houses to Homes, with Betty contributing her own $1,000 that she was able to raise.
JanTerm is a program offered at the Westminster Schools where during January, students are allowed to take only one course of their choosing that deviates from their regular academics.
For example Puerto Rico: Learn, Build, Connect JanTerm, which allows 20 students to travel to Puerto Rico to aid the community there.
Above are pictures of the work sites and the finished shipping container that is now a vital part of the Community Center.
