Founding Story Told from the Founder's Perspective:
I am a Chinese immigrant and came to this country when I was only eight. Underestimating how intensely difficult my life would be due to the language barrier and cultural differences, I was genuinely ecstatic about this new part of my life.
Of course, my expectations were sadly shattered when I underwent the difficult journey of learning a new language all over again. During the days when I couldn't speak English at school, I suffered. I could not express myself how I wished to and it was a sad experience.
Ultimately, after being here for nine years, I have concluded that I would never wish this unpleasant experience on anyone else and I, most importantly, wish to provide a listening ear or helping hand to those who are also unable to communicate themselves well due to the language difference. Thus the idea of Numbers and Voices was fabricated.
I wanted to provide a safe environment for immigrant children like myself who wanted a space where they could be content and comfortable with voicing their thoughts, while also providing some sort of educational value (which I admit was the marketing strategy used to attract the attention of parents).
Thus, in the basement of my house, classes started with me and three of my friends. And surely enough, we've gained more than almost ten times that amount over the years and I'd like to say that along with my Co-founder. Angelina Guan, and our resident teacher (my father), we have helped these children not only become proficient academically, but we have provided a space for them to be comfortable and have a voice.
